What To Know About hiring a car in Egypt

The best way to see the sights in Egypt is by car. Hire one in advance for the best prices. Collect it on arrival and you’re all set.

Hiring a car in Egypt isn’t complicated but it may help to know the following facts.

Q: How old do you need to be to hire a car in Egypt?

A: You must be at least 21 to hire a car in Egypt but many hire companies insist on drivers being 25 or over. Drivers under the age of 25 may need to pay a young drivers’ surcharge when renting a car. The upper age limit for hiring a car here is 65.

Q: What documents will I need to hire a car?

A: A credit card is required to secure a booking and an amount taken as a security hold for the duration of the booking.

Visitors from outside Egypt will require an International Drivers Permit, as well as a full driving licence from their own country. A passport will also be needed to secure the booking.

Q: Do I need to bring a car seat for my child?

A: Child car seats are not a legal requirement in Egypt – although it is recommended you use them. While many hire companies will be able to provide them, be sure to make arrangements in advance. Children under the age of seven are not allowed to travel in the front seat.

Q: Can I return my hire car at any time?

A: Returning a hire car outside scheduled office hours will usually incur a supplement. Check details with your rental company when you collect your car.
