Hiring a car in Mauritius | Penguin Car Hire

Q: How old do I need to be to hire a car in Mauritius?

A: The minimum age to rent a car here is 21 years old and you must have been driving for at least a year.

Q: What licence do I need?

A: Your usual licence is fine. An international driving licence is not necessary unless you plan to stay longer than four weeks.

Q: Why does my hire car have yellow numberplates and not white?

A: All registered hire cars will have two yellow – not white - number plates. Ensure yours is legal by choosing from one of our reputable car hire companies.

Q: Where can I collect my rental car?

A:
Cars can be collected from Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam International Airport or some companies will deliver them to you at your hotel.

Q: What is the cheapest time to hire a car in Mauritius?

A: You may find cheaper rentals available during the island’s low season (May to September).

Q: What paperwork do I need to carry?

A:
Keep your driving licence and car hire documents with you when driving in case you are stopped by local police.

Q: Do I need a GPS?

A: GPS can be added to any rental but it may not be worthwhile. Locals say the road network changes too frequently for GPS to remain suitably up-to-date.
